There are different ways of approaching a travel destination. Often, travel literature attempts to give a description for foreign visitors by reference to the readers supposed culture. Endeavouring to explain foreign parts completely and to make them totally comprehensible, such guidance is ultimately bound to prove abortive.

Within his own cultural sphere the traveller may still be able to understand large parts and complex correlations of terra incognita. But as soon as he leaves his own cultural sphere, the protective cloak of direct understanding and cultural experience fails him. This enhances the importance of the commonplace details as described by most travel guides. And the need to translate such everyday matters instead of understanding them instinctively produces a strong inner distance between the traveller and the foreign culture. The alien is forced to deal wirh the new environment with heightened awareness and to become more deeply involved in it.
